Healthcare Power of Attorney Clinic in New Trier Township

Planning ahead can make all the difference in a medical emergency. North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic is proud to partner with New Trier Township to offer a free Healthcare Power of Attorney Clinic for families on Wednesday, May 6 from 4:00–7:00 PM in Winnetka.

Under HIPAA, once a child turns 18, their medical information becomes private (even from parents or guardians) making it essential to have the proper legal documents in place. This clinic provides students age 18 and older the opportunity to complete a Healthcare Power of Attorney with guidance and support at no cost. Thank you to New Trier Township for partnering with us to bring this important resource to the community.

In partnership with the Village of Wilmette Human Relations Commission and Wilmette Public Library, we invite you to A Conversation on Understanding Immigration Enforcement and the Well-being of Our Community. Join for a panel discussion on how the Village strives to foster and promote an inclusive community where all feel safe and welcome, and learn more about immigration enforcement activity and your rights. NSLAC attorney, Irma Wilson, will join panelist in sharing valuable immigration insights.

Small Business 101 Clinic at the Highwood Library

NSLAC is pleased to partner with the Highwood Library to host a one-hour presentation covering the benefits of setting up a legal entity to protect your small business and personal assets.  This will be followed by a clinic at a later date to receive assistance with drafting the necessary documents to set up a legal entity (most likely an LLC) and, if necessary, make other regulatory filings (like IRS forms to get a tax ID and elect tax status).

Powers of Attorney (POA) and Short-Term Guardianship documents are vital tools that help individuals plan for the unexpected. Powers of attorney allow people to appoint an agent to make healthcare or property decisions in the event of incapacity, while short-term guardianships let parents ensure care for their minor children without going to court, especially in cases of travel, medical procedures, or immigration-related concerns.

Short-Term Guardianship Clinic in Highland Park

North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic (NSLAC) has partnered with the Highland Park Community Early Learning Center to host a short-term guardianship clinic. Short-term guardianships are a means for parents to ensure the care of their minor children without going to court.  They can be useful if a parent is concerned with deportation, traveling out of town, having a medical procedure, or simply unavailable for a specified duration of time.  While any parent will benefit from a short-term guardianship plan, they are especially crucial given potential changes in US immigration laws.
