Services Offered

The Domestic Violence Law Practice of North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic provides free legal assistance to at-risk survivors living in north suburban Cook County and Lake County.

We Help With: Emergency Relief and Family Law Matters

Emergency Relief

Orders of Protection (Emergency/Plenary)  

NSLAC offers legal assistance in obtaining orders of protection against intimate partners, former intimate partners, roommates, former roommates, people with whom you have a child in common, and people to whom you are related. We help with emergencies and longer (plenary) orders.   

Family Law Matters

We represent survivors of domestic violence in divorce and parental allocation proceedings (for people who are not married but have children in common).  

Divorce and Parentage/Allocation of Parental Responsibilities and Parenting Plans
  • We offer legal representation and guidance to survivors in cases of divorce or paternity/maternity when domestic violence is present.  
  • We offer legal representation and guidance to survivors in disputes over a parent’s involvement when domestic violence is present.  
Child Support and Spousal Maintenance

We offer legal representation and guidance to survivors seeking or responding to requests for child support and/or spousal maintenance when domestic violence is present.  

Allocation and Support Modifications  

We offer legal representation and guidance to survivors attempting to change court orders regarding parental time and responsibilities when domestic violence is present.  

Immigration (Violence Against Women Act Self-Petition, U Visa, & T Visa)  

We offer legal representation and guidance to survivors seeking to gain citizenship. We work closely with the Immigration team and information on qualifications can be found on the Immigration webpage 

Housing (Safe Homes Act)  

We offer legal representation and guidance to survivors seeking to break their lease due to a domestic violence situation. We work closely with the Housing team and information on qualifications can be found on the Housing webpage 

Safety Plans  

NSLAC is ready to assist in making the arrangements necessary to escape an abusive living situation.  

Social Services

NSLAC connects clients with vital social services to ensure clients receive wrap-around support and assistance.
