The mission of North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic (NSLAC) is to provide accessible, quality, equitable, free legal services in the areas of domestic violence, housing, and immigration to give low-income, at-risk community members access to justice and the opportunity to live productive and secure lives.
Do I Qualify for Free Legal Services?
NSLAC offers free legal services to residents of Lake County and north suburban Cook County. To qualify, clients must meet the following criteria:
- Live within our service area.
- Have a household income less than 250% of the federal poverty level (approximately $78,000 for a family of four).
There are no income requirements for victims of domestic violence.

NSLAC provides specialized free legal services in these key practice areas:
Domestic Violence
The Domestic Violence Law Practice at NSLAC provides free legal services to at-risk survivors. We provide representation and assistance in cases involving safety for survivors and their children, including Emergency and Plenary Orders of Protection, divorce, custody, and other family law matters. NSLAC’s domestic violence social workers help survivors access supportive resources while and after advocating for them in the courtroom.
Housing
The Housing Law Practice at NSLAC provides free legal representation and works with clients to help them regain stability in their lives in the face of housing insecurity. We represent tenants in housing matters such as evictions, lease disputes, lockouts, and wrongful retaliation. NSLAC’s housing social worker and community navigator help clients in securing supportive housing resources.
Immigration
The Immigration Law Practice at NSLAC provides free immigration legal services to our neighbors in need. NSLAC’s Immigration Law Practice specializes in supporting clients through various immigration matters, including family-based petitions, adjustment of status, Temporary Protected Status, U- and T-nonimmigrant status, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petitions, and asylum cases. The team includes a resource coordinator who supports clients in securing additional supportive resources.
