NSLAC’s Client was facing the loss of their housing after their landlord decided not to renew their rental agreement. After receiving an eviction notice and being sued for eviction, the client also experienced harassment from the landlord, adding to an already stressful situation.
Determined to defend their housing, the Client attended their eviction hearing but, due to confusion at the courthouse, missed their case being called. Although they had filed an appearance and received a fee waiver, they were unaware that additional paperwork was required to challenge the default order entered against them. Unable to find legal assistance elsewhere, the Client faced the possibility of both homelessness and an eviction judgment on their record.
NSLAC stepped in to provide both legal representation and social work services. While NSLAC attorneys negotiated an agreement that allowed the Client to move out by a specified date without an eviction judgment on their record, an NSLAC social worker helped the Client explore housing options, review monthly expenses, connect with more affordable insurance resources, and complete housing applications. After the Client fulfilled the agreement, the court dismissed the case and sealed the record.
Months later, when the Client's housing costs unexpectedly increased, NSLAC again provided consultation and support. Together, their attorney and social worker helped the Client protect their housing record and continue building long-term housing stability.
