NSLAC’s Client was referred to the Immigration Practice Team after first working with the Domestic Violence Practice. After coming to the United States from Mexico on a tourist visa more than a decade ago, the Client later became a lawful permanent resident through their spouse and began building a life here.
When the Client sought help from NSLAC, they were preparing to move forward after experiencing ongoing emotional abuse and verbal aggression from their spouse. They had also filed multiple police reports, including one involving reckless driving while the Client's child was in the vehicle. Concerned about how their spouse might respond to divorce proceedings, the Client turned to NSLAC for guidance.
In addition to pursuing a divorce, the Client hoped to become a U.S. citizen as soon as possible. NSLAC explained that they could safely move forward with the divorce and advised them when they would become eligible to apply for naturalization. Equipped with a clear understanding of their legal options and timeline, the Client was able to move forward with greater confidence and was encouraged to return when they became eligible to begin the naturalization process.
