As a senior with a disability, the Client’s subsidized housing has been a lifeline to keep him in safe, stable, and affordable housing. That was in jeopardy when the Client had an accident in his unit. The local housing authority needed to make costly repairs, and because Client couldn’t reimburse them, they decided to terminate him from the subsidized housing program altogether.

The Client reached out to NSLAC for assistance and an NSLAC attorney and social worker got to work on the Client’s case. NSLAC worked with the Client and with members of his social services team to ensure that the Client was fully supported. TheNSLAC social worker assisted the Client with locating and getting approved for financial assistance while the Client’s NSLAC attorney represented him throughout the housing authority grievance process. 

In an unusual decision, the housing authority reversed the decision to terminate the Client’s housing. In doing so, they noted that the Client and his NSLAC attorney had provided compelling testimony and presented strong evidence that he should be allowed to stay and maintain his housing. The Client’s NSLAC attorney negotiated a repayment plan using the financial assistance funds the Client had been approved for. These payments were the final step in ensuring the Client’s housing termination was reversed.
