NSLAC’s Client sought legal support after experiencing domestic violence and ongoing harassment from their former partner, with whom they share a child. Although the abuser had previously been charged with domestic violence, the charge was later dismissed as part of an agreement to provide child support. Following additional incidents, law enforcement responded to multiple calls, and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) required both parents to complete parenting and domestic violence classes. The Client completed every required class, demonstrating their commitment to creating a safe and stable environment for their child.
After the relationship ended, the harassment continued. The abuser followed the Client to work, repeatedly emailed them, made threats, and shared inappropriate information. The former partner also failed to follow through on childcare responsibilities, including removing the child from daycare without the Client's knowledge after falsely claiming they would be taking the child there. In response, the Client obtained an Emergency Order of Protection.
While working with NSLAC, the Client experienced another act of physical violence. NSLAC attorneys advised the Client on additional legal protections, including petitioning for a new Emergency Order of Protection. When the Client later dismissed the pending case in Cook County, the matter fell outside NSLAC's service area because the client had moved to Kane County. Although NSLAC could no longer provide direct representation, the Client left with a clear understanding of the legal options available to help protect themselves and their child.
