NSLAC is looking for volunteer attorney for our upcoming short-term guardianship and power of attorney clinic in the City of Highwood. Short-term guardianships are a means for parents to ensure the care of their minor children without going to court. They can be useful if a parent is concerned with deportation, traveling out of town, having a medical procedure, or simply unavailable for a specified duration of time. While any parent will benefit from a short-term guardianship plan, they are especially crucial given potential changes in US immigration laws. Powers of attorney allow individuals to designate an agent to make healthcare or property decisions if they become incapacitated. Volunteer attorneys can expect to meet with clients and complete statutory short-term guardianship forms that best reflect the clients’ wishes for the care of their children.
