Free legal clinic opens in Firehouse

Legal aid was identified as a pressing, unmet need in the Highland Park and Highwood communities in 2012, when members of the Highland Park Human Services Task Force heard of the plight of vulnerable residents unable to afford sound legal advice.

The vision for a free legal clinic in downtown Highland Park, still a dream only months ago, became a reality last week.

The Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic is now open two mornings each week to assist income-eligible clients with filing documents, seeking court orders and other tasks related to housing, domestic violence and immigration.

The clinic celebrated its grand opening May 1 at the city-owned Firehouse Youth Center, which will serve as its home for the time being.
