Legal Aid For Unaccompanied Migrant Children Temporarily Restored

A federal judge in California has ordered the Trump administration to temporarily reinstate legal aid for tens of thousands of unaccompanied migrant children. This decision ensures that vulnerable children navigating the complex immigration system won’t have to do so alone.
Access to legal representation can be the difference between safety and deportation. This ruling is a crucial step, but the fight for permanent protections continues.

Green Card Processing Pause

Trump Administration Pauses Green Card Processing for Refugees and Asylees

The Trump Administration has paused green card processing for certain individuals, including refugees and asylees, as part of a broader immigration crackdown. This move temporarily halts the path to legal permanent residency for those already granted refuge in the U.S., adding new hurdles for vulnerable communities.

This decision follows previous actions to tighten immigration procedures, including increased vetting of social media accounts. While framed as a national security measure, it raises serious concerns about due process and the future of those seeking safety in our country.

NSLAC remains committed to advocating for immigrants and refugees navigating these unpredictable changes.

Humanitarian Parole Update- Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela

Humanitarian Parole Update- Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela

The Department of Homeland Security has announced that it will revoke humanitarian parole and legal protections for approximately 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who came to the U.S. since October 2022 under humanitarian parole. These individuals—who arrived with financial sponsors and were granted two-year residency and work permits—will lose their legal status on April 24 and could face deportation.
This decision leaves thousands of families in uncertainty, impacting communities, workplaces, and local economies. At NSLAC, we stand with immigrants and are committed to providing legal support and resources during this crisis.
If you or someone you know is affected, seek legal guidance immediately. If you live in northern suburban Cook County or Lake County and you qualify for free immigration assistance, please contact NSLAC at 847 737 4042.

TPS Haiti

Haiti TPS Update

The U.S. government has announced that the Haiti TPS designation will end on August 3, 2025, unless extended. This decision, announced by the Department of Homeland Security, will impact nearly 500,000 Haitians currently living in the U.S. under TPS.

TPS is a critical protection that allows individuals from designated countries facing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions to live and work in the U.S. temporarily.

At NSLAC, we recognize this decision’s profound impact on individuals, families, and communities. We are committed to supporting those affected and will continue providing free, confidential immigration legal assistance and resources to individuals who qualify in north suburban Cook County and Lake County, IL during this uncertain time.

Update on USCIS Processing Pause for Certain Immigration Applications

USCIS has temporarily paused the processing of applications filed by individuals paroled under Uniting for Ukraine (U4U), the Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan (CHNV) parole process, and Family Reunification Parole programs.
This pause does not mean these relief options, such as TPS, are permanently closed. While USCIS officers cannot issue decisions at this time, applications already filed may still be processed in the future. Filing a timely application for TPS or other immigration relief may also help prevent accrual of unlawful presence while it is pending. Learn more here.
