The Client was a single mother of two children. For years, her Housing Choice Voucher provided her with stability through a rent subsidy. In the fall of 2023, everything changed when the housing authority recalculated the Client’s rent portion and increased her rent retroactively for 3 months. Without knowledge of the rent increase, the Client was unable to budget accordingly and began falling behind on rent. Consequently, her landlord filed for eviction, putting her at risk of losing her voucher and subsidy. The Client reached out to North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic for assistance with her eviction case. NSLAC helped her apply for funds from the Court-Based Rental Assistance Program. Despite several issues during the application process, months of persistent advocacy led to her approval of the funds. An NSLAC’s Housing attorney represented the Client in court and successfully got her eviction case dismissed and sealed.
